This is a great post that every car renter should read. Whenever anyone feels that they have been charged incorrectly, whether for additional fees or damages that they feel they are not liable for, it is always appropriate and necessary to dispute the charges in a calm manner.
Many feel that they are being deliberately targeted, but as you pointed out, it is often the result of a mistake on the part of the car rental company.
Excellent information!
