There are many reasons why you would wish to conduct a personal credit check. It could be that you simply wish to delve further into your credit problems and discover its roots. Or it could just as easily be due to your reluctance to pay for the cost of obtaining several kinds of credit reports for your use.

The reasons don’t matter. If it’s a personal credit check you wish to accomplish, we’ll help you the best way we can.

METHODS TO CONDUCT PERSONAL CREDIT CHECKS

Most people who are interested in learning the full unadulterated truth about their credit check would usually have to obtain copies of their reports from all three major credit bureaus, namely Experian, Equifax and Trans Union.

If you wish to save on money, however, you could just obtain one copy from any of the previously mentioned bureaus then verify by yourself if all the details contained in the report are accurate and valid.

First, you can visit your bank and request for an appointment with your bank manager. You can consult him if there happened to be several details in your credit report regarding your bank payments that seemed inconsistent or incorrect.

Secondly, you can always double check with the records filed in the mortgage companies you’ve applied loans to and see if all the information in your credit report is once again completely accurate.

Thirdly, you can always request for similar verification from all of the credit card companies that you have an account in.

FACTORS TO CONSIDER WHEN CONDUCTING PERSONAL CREDIT CHECKS

Personal Details – Make sure that each and every detail in your account really does belong to your file. If you happen to be named Jane Smith, you should know by now that there are probably scores of other females who possess the same name. Make sure that none of their credit details – especially the bad ones – finds themselves into your credit report!

Inquiries – There is a time limit provided by the Fair Credit Reporting Act that determines up to how long inquiries can be a valid part of your credit report.

Payment History – The FCRA ensures users are completely protected against abuse or negligence from any credit reporting agency. If your credit report, for instance, contains any details concerning delinquent payments you made beyond the past seven years, you can automatically request the credit report company to delete such details from your report.

Other Inaccurate Information – If you notice anywhere in your credit report an inaccurate fact, you are again advised to immediately report this to the CRA responsible for the report.

Incomplete Data – Any incomplete detail in your credit report must also be immediately rectified. Take, for instance, your change of heart when it comes to prompt payments. If you were a notorious delinquent payer before but a remarkably prompt one today, the credit report must reflect BOTH facts!

WHAT TO DO IF YOUR PERSONAL CREDIT CHECK UNCOVERS MISTAKES OR INACCURACIES

Inform the credit reporting agency responsible for the mistakes by letter about the information that you deemed inaccurate, incomplete, invalid or erroneous.

Your letter must contain your complete contact details – name, address, telephone number and email address – and clear and concise explanations about which parts of the report are you disputing.

You may also opt to enclose a copy of the credit report they’ve filed with the disputed facts or figures properly encircled. Be sure to send your letter by certified mail with a request for return receipt so you have valid proof for the whole process.
