Elections were held for the Territorial Assembly of Upper Volta on March 31, 1957. The results were: Unified Democratic Party (PDU) 35 seats, Voltaic Democratic Movement (MDV) 26 seats, African Popular Movement (MPA) 5 seats and Independents 2 seats.
After the elections PDU formed a government together with the Voltaic Democratic Movement (MDV). PDU held seven ministries and MDV five. The unity proved short-lived. PSEMA and MDV revolted against the vice-president Ouezzine Coulibaly and formed an opposition bloc, Voltaic Solidarity (SV). Thus PDU was no more. In 1958 MDV, along with the rest of SV, merged into the African Regroupment Party (PRA).
