Jesse Martin at age 17, departed Melbourne, Australia on December 7, 1998 to begin his solo, non-stop journey around the world in his 34-foot (10 m) sloop Lionheart-Mistral. Approximately 11 months later, on 31 October, 1999, after circumnavigating the world he arrived back in Melbourne and (literally) sailed into the record books at age 18. The entire journey covered 328 days and 27,000 nautical miles (50,000 km) in all.
He documented every part of his journey, including his fears and struggles. This can be classified as Modern History because he used sources, evaluation and causation. He describes his journey as nothing more than a dream. “A man who dies at 80 unsatisfied is a tragedy,” quotes Jesse Martin. “I’m a normal kid fulfilling my dreams.”
